OUR MISSION
Due to the nearly 50 year long regime of dictator Enver Hoxha, Albania remained cut off from the rest of the world until 1990. Most Albanian films made before 1991 were never translated into another language and were rarely screened outside of Albania. Since 2012, the Albanian Cinema Project has worked to change this fact, bringing a 'new' national cinema to international screens.
What began as an initiative to bring much needed awareness, attention, and assistance to the plight of the Albanian National Film Archive, with the support of the Albanian Ministry of Culture, the US Embassy in Tirana, the Association of Moving Image Archivists and concerned members of the international film and archives communities, has developed into a capacity building project for archives at risk in the Balkans. We are actively forging alliances with media archives throughout the Western Balkans to build regional partnerships to promote long-term preservation of the region's audiovisual heritage, and to conduct continuing education workshops for archives professionals.
The campaign to preserve "Five Films in Five Years" continues to meet its yearly goals, and the "Archives in Motion" (AIM) Preservation Workshops initiative now forms an integral component of our mission. We are developing partnerships with governmental and intergovernmental agencies, and the concerned community of international filmmakers, film archivists, film scholars, and cultural heritage preservation pioneers in order to bring the latest skills and technologies for preservation for access to the region's archives.
